Horse-drawn sleigh ride (kulig) below Giewont in winterWinter Activities Beyond SkiingNon-skiers visiting in winter have more options than most guides suggest. Snowshoeing the valley floors is accessible, scenic, and uncrowded. Sleigh rides (kuligi) are a genuine highland tradition, and winter hiking on valley-floor routes in proper footwear is feasible and often beautiful.
Aquapark in Zakopane, a family-friendly attractionFamily ActivitiesZakopane works for families — but with calibration. Young children under 5 will find the main trails difficult; the thermal baths, the Gubałówka funicular, and the valley walks are the reliable options. School-age children open up significantly more of the hiking offer.
Outdoor pool at Polana Szymoszkowa with a view of the TatrasThermal Baths and WellnessThree major thermal bath complexes are within easy reach of Zakopane, all fed by geothermal springs and all operating year-round. The experience in winter — outdoor pools, steam rising, Tatra peaks visible in the distance — almost qualifies as a separate activity.
Willa Oksza, a carved wooden villa in the Zakopane StyleSightseeing and Town ExplorationZakopane has an architectural identity unlike anywhere else in Poland — the "Zakopane Style" wooden villas of Stanisław Witkiewicz, the Pęksowy Brzyzek cemetery, Krupówki end to end, and the Gubałówka panorama above the town.
Zakopane at night in winter, with the floodlit Wielka Krokiew ski jump and the Tatra range behindSkiing and SnowboardingZakopane's ski season runs roughly mid-December to mid-March. It's not the Alps — what it offers instead is good value, genuine mountain atmosphere, a growing ski touring scene, and the cultural quirk of doing après-ski in a góralskie karczma.

About this guide
Tymoteusz MrózFounder & Editor · Zakopane

Zakopane sits at the foot of the Tatra Mountains in southern Poland — the country's highest peaks, a national park, and a highland culture unlike anywhere else in Central Europe. It's a ski resort in winter, a hiking base in summer, a thermal bath town in autumn, and a town with several very different faces depending on which street you're standing on.

This guide is written by Tymoteusz Mróz — publisher of the Zakoplan guidebook and CEO of the Made in Zakopane Local Tourism Organization. Everything here is locally verified, regularly updated, and honest about what's worth your time and what isn't.
